Mindful Strength

Understanding Pain & Making Gains

April 29 with Kathryn Bruni Young

Is it pain, discomfort, or just intensity? Are you getting tissue adaptation, damage or injury? We all meet this teacher eventually - pain and injury are part of being human and part of taking risks.

What should you do when you're interrupted by unclear sensations? Is it okay to keep strength training through a chronic condition?

If you're a student who can relate to the confusion and frustration that can come with experiencing pain while you train, or you're a teacher looking to guide your students with more confidence and compassion, join us for a visit from Kathryn Bruni Young of Mindful Strength.

This workshop includes 2 mini-lectures, and 2 strengthening movement sessions, plus a copy of the Mindful Strength Practice deck - a totally original way to plan and enjoy your strength and movement practice. All levels welcome including those new to strength training and those with lots of experience.

Workshop outline:

  • PART A
    • Learning: strength principles, human adaptation, and the importance of a progressive approach
    • Practice: mobility practice using lighter weights and bands to build capacity in the deeper ranges of motion. Think yoga poses with weights, weighted stretches, jefferson curls, squat variations, and creative ways to use resistance
  • PART B:
    • Learning: pain science, why building strength alongside pain can be useful, discussion of safety, preparation, mindfulness, discernment and troubleshooting what to do when pain (inevitably) arises
    • Practice: strength class of the day will be lifting heavier kettlebells and dumbbells for compound movements. Think deadlifts, rows, hinges, squats, carries, and the full body strength exercises.

About the Facilitator:

Kathryn is the founder of Mindful Strength, the host of the Mindful Strength Podcast, the author of the Mindful Strength Practice Deck, and an international teacher. She runs an online studio membership as well as many popular strength programs.

Kathryn began teaching yoga as a teenager in her mother’s studio (Downward Dog Yoga Centre) at the age of 17. By age 22 she had completed a handful of trainings, but was also managing persisting back and knee injuries, so she began looking for new modalities to bring balance to her practice. Kathryn found strength training and immediately began implementing the principles of exercise science into her own practice and classes. Within a few months her injuries had healed and her strength had surpassed what anyone had expected. Nearly a decade later she continues to teach strength online and in person to people looking for a balanced and mindful approach. Kathryn has mentored with strength coach Lovedeep Dhunna, as well as pain researcher Neil Pearson. Her other most influential teachers have been her mother Diane Bruni, Richard Freeman, Jules Mitchell, Ido Portal, and PICP certification.
